Submitted for Trijam #314

-The bad "life advices" on the screen are hints to the level :)

Premade assets disclaimer:

-Bob, Shawn, and the background squares are some platformer tiles i made last week to practice making 2D platformers in general

-Background music was a scrapped bg idea for Help! My printer malfunctioned

-Salto En madera | Royalty-free Music - Pixabay was the jumping audio

Bob the Block has one singular goal: To reach the portal. However, he is rather stubborn and believes that the easiest way to the goal is to hold the right key. Shawn the square saw it and decided to help with his newfound artifact--time-pausing clock. It pauses the time and allow Shawn to guide(push) Bob to the right path.

Controls

A/D: Left/Right

Space: Jump

E: Time pause

Q: Restart

R: Unstuck Bob(I used box collider wrong, so Bob will sometimes stuck with the tilemap. Press R to unstuck him)

-Also i think the yellow tiles are not working so they do not mean anything

What to expect

-Somewhat of a difficulty(About 2-3 tries per level)

-On pause, Bob will have no Gravity(But Shawn still does)

-Pushing Bob to the finish line(Just like how you carries your teammates)

Guides for each level

(It's not much strategy, so i will recommend to play the game first)

Before the guide, i apologize for making the second level one of the hardest...I planned a progression where a challenge for the previous mechanic is introduced before the next mechanic.

The difficulty is based off how hard it is to complete the level FIRST TRY. With 3-5 tries, all levels here can hopefully be completed:)

Level 1-Pushing guide Difficulty 2/10 Shawn wait at the hole, and time pause once Bob is on top. Then, while paused, push Bob up. (This is (one of) the main mechanic of this game I will call up-push in future guides)
Level 2-Pushing challenge Difficulty 7/10 Up-push twice, then catch Bob on the stairs(Predict where bob will land), then Up-push to the end, make 1-2 stops on the stairs. On the stairs, step left a bit to catch Bob more efficiently.
Level 3-Meet button Difficulty 3/10 Wait for Bob to drop a little, pause, then jump on Bob to press the button
Level 4-Collaboration Difficulty 6/10 Up-push three times, then Shawn drop down to press the button
Level 5-Finale Difficulty 7/10 Up-push just enough to catch Bob at the first platform, Up-push again, then Shawn press the button

Leave a comment and don't forget to rate my game in the jam:) Thanks so much for playing

Pretty cool! Glad to see the platformer I've heard so much about is done. Some notes:

- Controls don't feel right, which can probably be fixed by changing restart to the r key so it is next to time stop.

- Pushing might need to be a little stronger, I really struggled with gaining enough height on the second level.

- There are occasional cases where the player can't jump when overhanging a platform. This happened to me once or twice, but the hitbox for checking if the player is grounded may need to be a bit wider.

Other than that, super cool idea and it worked out.

thanks for the feedback:) I’ll make another build simply changing the restart button to Qsince R is occupied and increasing the isGrounded circle check(which I can hopefully do in 1:26)I’ll do that at the last second since this is probably the last bit of time I am going to get in my 3 hours(I paused a lot and saved some time).

The push is designed to be just there in many levels. On the second level some stops can be made on the stairs to pause again:)

Hi! This game has a lot of good ideas, but it´s very difficult to play, needs more polishing. I beat all the levels, but I needed to use a lot “R” key (:P). A lot of stucks everywhere XDDD

This game has a lot of potential… ^^

Great work!!!

thanks for playing the entire game:) my mistake was at the very beginning when I used box collider on the characters(which is probably the reason they get stuck often). I don’t know if it’s the tiredness at 2 am or simply laziness, I didn’t do an auto unstuck for both characters. I’ll try to polish this game since currently it’s not really enjoyable

Well, the “R” button for me was necessary to end the game, but because there´s so little time to go fast to the next “help point”… After the gamejam maybe you can polish some points, like:

  • Give more impulse when pushing up your friend.
  • Give more time to go to the next point before the pause ends.

But, again, the idea is awesome as a puzzle game with difficult progression. The level design explores new ways to use the pause and no-gravity effects…

I have 1:26 minutes left:) I’ll try to implement

-change restart button

-make jumping on edge easier

-change pausing time

Thanks for the suggestion;)

Well...I did have 6 minutes left... might aswell do the change now

Update: 2:58:34 was my final time lol I can't afford another bug

Currently i have no idea if the collider really worked... If it does not please leave a comment before jam submission ends...will appreciate it:)
